Mapping domain-names into P2P space

From OrganicDesign Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Dynamic DNS can be used for linking a domain name with a dynamic IP address. If the P2P space manages these domain resources, it can map domain names to P2P nodes with inherent fault tolerance, redundancy and load-balancing. There are a number of free dynamic DNS providers around and a list is maintained here.

Organic Design is currently using www.zoneedit.com for the dynamic DNS service and wikid.pl polls the local router for external IP changes and notifies ZoneEdit when it changes. ZoneEdit also offer free email forwarding.

Redundant name servers

One of the problems with the DNS system is that a name server can't set its A record dynamically based on which IP's respond. But another approach is to have many nameserver registered with the top-level and each of their A-records point to themselves. That way the top level will use the first nameserver in the list which responds, and that one is then guarunteed to have a working A record because its using itself.
