29 September 2006
At about 12:50pm on Friday 29 September 2006 a power spike occured effecting multiple house holds in Tiki Sreet, and neighbouring streets wuch as Komaru Street, and Raumati Road. The Tiki Street power spike was caused by Abernethy contractors (09 276 9683) doing drainage work along the Street. A witness living at 32 Ara Street saw a dump truck tipper get snagged on power lines. Contractors then used another piece of machinary to try to remove the snagged powerlines without notifying Vector energy or cutting off power. Power lines were severed and a power spike and subsequent brownout occurred. At least 20 houses in the area had several to almost all plugged in appliances destroyed (items such as fridge, washing machine, TV, DVD player, laptop transformers etc) due to the voltage spike, and switchboards and sockets burnt out. Effected items just had to be connected to the wall, not necessarily running at the time.
